Before & after stucco repair projects from Ramsey, Rogers, Maple Grove and NW Metro MN — cracks, moisture damage, full restucco, and everything in between.
Stucco holds up well, but Minnesota's 60–70 degree temperature swings from summer to winter cause expansion and contraction that eventually cracks the surface. Once water gets behind stucco during spring thaw or heavy rain, it can rot the sheathing underneath without any visible sign until it's a major repair. Tim Hanson has been patching and restucco-ing homes across Ramsey, Rogers, and Maple Grove for 30 years. Catch it early — small patches are always cheaper than full wall sections.
A Ramsey homeowner had a 1970s split-level with heavy spider-web cracking across the entire front-elevation stucco. The original stucco had shrunk and separated in multiple areas, and probing found soft spots near the window corners where water had gotten behind. Tim's crew removed all existing stucco on the front elevation, repaired two areas of soft sheathing, applied new lath and base coat, then finished with a sand-float texture to match the original.
Classic diagonal cracking from the corners of all four windows on this Rogers home — a telltale sign of movement stress concentrated at weak points. Tim cut out the cracks to sound stucco, primed all edges with bonding agent, packed the cracks with matching stucco, and blended the texture seamlessly across each repaired area. The result is invisible from 10 feet.
A Maple Grove homeowner noticed a soft, bubble-like area near the foundation of their stucco exterior — the stucco had delaminated from the sheathing below, trapping moisture. Tim removed the failing section, dried out the wall cavity, replaced the affected sheathing board, installed new felt and mesh, and applied a two-coat stucco system with matching texture. The wall was treated with a penetrating silicone water repellent after curing.
This Elk River home's north-facing gable end had significant staining and pitting from years of weather exposure with no maintenance. The surface had not delaminated but had lost most of its protective finish coat. Tim cleaned and prepped the entire gable, applied a scratch coat to level uneven areas, then finished with a dash-texture top coat to restore both the appearance and the weather resistance of the surface.
